So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am from San Bernardino California born and raised. I started to Dj in 1984 in High school. Also played all youth sports growing up. I moved to Phoenix and 1986 summer time . While growing up in Phoenix my career choices include; food and beverage Cooking Construction & medicine. Currently self employed owner operator of Mellow B entertainment service.
Lets dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Wow that is a huge question! I will try to lay it all out…… I will try to be brief but very detailed if you don’t mind.
Be as detailed as you like.
Definitely not an easy path. It was fun when we were young ,living at home DJ ing while parents paid the bills lol. But, seriously moving to Arizona in the 80s was wild . I was playing music at hiuse partis and weddigs before i Actually made the move to Az and try to make a business out of playing music . BEING A DJ, It was a lot to learn!
18 years old leaving the crib to teach a childhood friend how to drive a 5 speed that his parents got him to bring ouf here For school and work. I was trying to break into a market where I knew NO ONE
What should we know about your business? What does your business do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
1st about my business (entertainment services)is that I have entertainment for all occasion’s. Most of my music is kid friendly by way of a radio edits allowing me me to entertain at Weddings and schools. I have found that this is where I get most of my generated bookings due to the children in school dances. They are the base foundation for me because, as they grow older they become my clients . That has been my focus since 97′ ,that is to grow a following or an audience. The primary thing I feel that separates me personally is my work ethic and determination to please the client Maximizing my potential to be rebooked by someone else who is at that current event or by way of referral due to satisfy clients.
Ok Last Question, What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Well, the classic response is always financial in so many cases. I won’t say that! Because, I believe success or being successful is accepting the difficult part of the journey and triumph through the difficulties. Being consistent throughout all of it shows a lot of character and as entertainers our success is in the eye of the client. So for me it is satisfied customers and re booking that determines my success. That means, if I am still busy and getting booked I am doing something right by way of my client/customer. Advocating for entertainers, that the event I book for benefits them if they are booked as well. If there is any way to consolidate in condensed this answer I would have. But I think it’s best to be clear over being misunderstood.
